Just a couple cool things I've stumbled across as of late...
Air Fish?
Air Art from flip on Vimeo.
Car Passenger Video Game?
Carcade from Long Tran on Vimeo.
I’m a big fan of the films that Charles and Ray Eames did. They are great examples of how “designers” can have a an amazing view of, and impact on, the world. Here is a promotional film they did for the Polaroid SX-70 camera:
And I had to add this one too:
Winner at the New York Television & Radio Advertising Festival.

Doing research before starting...
found this little ditty surfing... it's a bit lengthy, but can be a good primer on how (and a bit of why) you'd want to do research before starting some project development...

something else to look at on subway walls besides graffiti
Officially announced today, the high-tech subway tunnel advertising tool is a first in North America for this type of digital advertising. It is "an LED system composed of 360 digital strips [that] will light up at timed intervals as the train passes the subway wall at speeds of 70 miles per hour, blending together to form a smooth-flowing video advertisement," according to Metro.

compfight: your new favorite idea-generation tool

"Ever wish you didn't have to click through two or three pages to do an "Advanced search" at photo sharing site Flickr, and then click around further to find the right size and photo options? Compfight, an AJAX-powered search site utilizing Flickr's API, is a super-streamlined interface for finding search terms in either tags or descriptions, choosing between Creative Commons and more traditional licenses, and popping up original sizes or choosing to head to a photo's default photo/comments page. Better still, mouse over a photo with a blue bottom border, and you'll see what size the original is available in. We've seen specialized search tools for Flickr before, but Compfight simply takes Flickr's built-in search tools and puts all the results on one super-thumbnailed page."
This got a big old "so what" from me when I first saw it, but trust me, play with it for a few minutes the next time you need to jog the visual thinking part of your brain.

livesurface takes the work out of photocomping
Some pretty amazing stuff at LiveSurface. Much better than searching Google Images and crossing our fingers.
They're maybe a bit pricey, but the vanishing point implementation, masking and shading is pretty spot-on. I found a few of these if you'd like to play around; email me.
Or maybe this gives us an idea to do this ourselves…

Paul Polak is the man
Design for the other 90%http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/
http://www.paulpolak.com/
Of the world’s total population of 6.5 billion, 5.8 billion people, or 90%, have little or no access to most of the products and services many of us take for granted; in fact, nearly half do not have regular access to food, clean water, or shelter. Design for the Other 90% explores a growing movement among designers to design low-cost solutions for this “other 90%.” Through partnerships both local and global, individuals and organizations are finding unique ways to address the basic challenges of survival and progress faced by the world’s poor and marginalized.
And he's coming to Philly in April:
The final culminating event will be held on Earth Day – Tuesday, April 22, 2008 – with a lecture by Dr. Paul Polak. Psychiatrist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul Polak is the founder and president of International Development Enterprises (IDE), a nonprofit that is harnessing the power of the market to alleviate poverty.

not to get into partisan politics or anything
but the applications of Barrack Obama's logo are nothing short of mind-boggling. See a detailed write-up here.
For each segment of people, the logo changes accordingly, tip-toeing a fine line between cliché and clever, and never crossing to the former's dark side. The iterations are quickly identifiable and feel genuinely concerned with connecting to the people they are talking to, without pandering. The executions are rather flawless and work perfectly on screen with the detailed gradients and subtle background illustrations. Even the typography is lovingly handled, with each segment changing ever so slightly and unified by the use of Gotham in most of the applications, and using other typefaces as fitting — even the "kids" typography looks finessed, despite the looming pitfalls of faux child-drawn typography. This kind of playful flexibility is typically reserved for the likes of MTV, VH1 or Nickelodeon and the breadth of this kind of brand architecture for global corporations with endless divisions.
